Subject: Proposal to Revolutionize the RIOS Mobile Suite with “Plug-and-Play” Hardware and a Software-First Approach, Powered by pfSense
1. Executive Summary
The RIOS Mobile product line is engineered to deliver sovereign connectivity to the edge. While technologically robust, the current Pillar-based system requires a degree of technical expertise that can be a barrier to adoption for a significant portion of our target market. To accelerate growth and enhance user experience, we propose “Project Unplugged,” an initiative to relaunch the RIOS Mobile offerings as a “plug-and-play,” app-driven ecosystem.
This evolution will be centered on integrating pre-configured Netgate pfSense Security Gateway Appliances as the new “brain” of our mobile kits.[1] This strategic hardware choice, combined with the development of a user-friendly mobile application and a new recurring revenue model for software features, will dramatically simplify the user experience, expand our market, and create a more profitable and sustainable product line. This report details the proposed RIOS Mobile Evolved suite, its underlying technology, and the strategic benefits of this pivotal transformation.
2. Research Findings: The Power of Netgate pfSense
Netgate pfSense is the world’s leading open-source driven firewall, VPN, and routing solution, available in pre-configured, high-performance hardware appliances.[1] Our research has identified several key features that make it the ideal platform for the next generation of RIOS Mobile:
- Enterprise-Grade at its Core: pfSense provides a stateful firewall, robust VPN capabilities (IPsec, OpenVPN, WireGuard), and advanced routing features out of the box.[2][3] This provides a powerful and secure foundation for our “Never Fail” connectivity promise.
- User-Friendly Management: While incredibly powerful, pfSense is managed through an intuitive web-based GUI, eliminating the need for complex command-line interactions.[1][4] This is the key to creating a “plug-and-play” experience.
- Compact and Efficient Hardware: Appliances like the Netgate 1100 are compact, silent, have low power draw, and use passive cooling with no moving parts, making them physically ideal for mobile and off-grid deployments.[4][5]
- Software-Defined and Extensible: The open-source nature of pfSense allows for extensive customization and the ability to add new features via software, which is crucial for our long-term vision of over-the-air updates and a subscription-based feature model.
By adopting pfSense, we are not reinventing the wheel; we are integrating a proven, trusted, and powerful engine into the heart of our mobile products.
3. The New RIOS Mobile Evolved Suite
Project Unplugged will replace the current Pillar I and II with two new, clearly defined products:
- Concept: The ultimate “set it and forget it” solution for unbreakable internet. The Guardian is a pre-configured kit that intelligently bonds and manages multiple cellular carriers.
- Plug-and-Play Hardware Kit:
- RIOS Guardian Hub: A Netgate 1100 appliance, pre-flashed with a custom DeReticular pfSense configuration.
- Trifi Multi-Carrier Modem: The core vSIM-enabled cellular modem.
- High-Gain Antenna: A single, easy-to-mount 5-in-1 antenna.
- Simplified Cabling: A single power cable and a single ethernet cable to connect to a laptop or router. The system is designed to be powered up and instantly operational.
- User Experience: The user simply powers on the hub. The device automatically connects to the best available cellular network. All management is handled through the new RIOS mobile app.
- Concept: The definitive mobile command center for users who require absolute connectivity for mission-critical tasks. The Sovereign seamlessly blends satellite and cellular networks.
- Plug-and-Play Hardware Kit:
- RIOS Sovereign Hub: A more powerful Netgate appliance (e.g., Netgate 2100) for handling higher throughput, pre-configured for multi-WAN load balancing.
- Trifi Multi-Carrier Modem.
- Integrated Starlink Port: A dedicated, clearly labeled port for connecting a Starlink dish with all necessary power and data adapters.
- High-Gain Antenna.
- Simplified Cabling.
- User Experience: The user powers on the hub and connects their Starlink. The Sovereign Hub automatically load-balances traffic between Starlink and cellular based on pre-defined (but app-adjustable) rules, ensuring critical applications never fail.
4. The RIOS Command App & Software-Defined Features
The centerpiece of the “plug-and-play” experience is the RIOS Command App, a mobile application that acts as a simple, intuitive remote control for the RIOS Hub.
- Core App Features (Free):
- One-Touch Setup: A simple wizard to guide users through the initial power-on.
- Real-Time Dashboard: A clean interface showing the status of all network connections (cellular and satellite), real-time signal strength (RSSI), and current data usage.
- System Health Monitoring: Simple green/yellow/red indicators for system temperature, uptime, and performance.
- Basic Notifications: Alerts for when the system switches between networks or if a connection is lost.
- RIOS Pro Subscription (Recurring Revenue):
The power of pfSense allows us to offer premium features via over-the-air software updates, unlocked through a subscription. This creates a new, high-margin recurring revenue stream.- Secure VPN Services: One-click activation of a built-in VPN (like WireGuard or OpenVPN) to encrypt all traffic, enhancing user security and privacy.
- Advanced Threat Protection: Enable intrusion detection and prevention services (IDS/IPS) for an added layer of enterprise-grade security.
- Application-Specific Traffic Shaping: An intuitive interface allowing users to prioritize traffic. For example, a user could create a rule to always route their Zoom calls over the Starlink connection for stability, while routing general web browsing over the cellular link to save satellite data.
- Detailed Analytics and Reporting: Access to historical data on network performance, usage trends, and security events.
5. Strategic Benefits and Implementation
- Massively Expanded Market: By removing the technical barriers to entry, the RIOS Mobile Evolved suite becomes accessible to a much broader audience, including remote workers, families, and small businesses.
- Reduced Support Costs: A simplified, pre-configured setup will significantly reduce the number of support requests related to installation and configuration.
- Creation of a Recurring Revenue Stream: The RIOS Pro subscription model moves us from a purely hardware-based sales model to a more profitable and predictable software and services company.
- Enhanced Product Value and Stickiness: Over-the-air updates and new features will keep the product feeling fresh and essential, increasing customer loyalty and long-term value.
By integrating the proven power and flexibility of Netgate pfSense, DeReticular can transform its RIOS Mobile line from a product for specialists into a user-friendly ecosystem for everyone, truly delivering on the promise of sovereign connectivity for the edge.
